Stephen picked up his dad’s button accordion at 5 years of age and taught himself to play simple folk songs. At the age of 10, he bought a small drum kit, inspired by a new found love of rock and pop music playing on the radio. Stephen played percussion through his high school years, occasionally picking up gigs with his music teacher. By his late teens he had put together a rock and roll band, touring through northern Alberta and British Columbia.
After graduating college, Stephen performed in several bands in the Lethbridge, AB area, covering many musical styles and appearing at the South Country Fair. In the mid nineties he was part of the Calgary group Waterbody, releasing an album of original material in the funk/Celtic/pop vein and performing regularly in the local club scene. Prior to joining Shadoplay, Stephen performed with the CGS Project, a jazz-fusion group that was featured at Ledgefest, on A-Channel’s Wired show, and regularly at McNally Robinson’s bookstore.
