Alex Hutchison - Bass

Alex Hutchison was inspired to play bass after a Cream concert in 1967. His first Band – Tycobrae, a Hendrix tribute with Neil Kowall on guitar. In 1975, Piebald Shark, opened up for Dr. Hook in Saskatoon and the Gainsborough Gallery and the Sam Hill Band(Foster Child) in Calgary.

Starting in 1981, Shadoplay performed 14 years consecutively at the Calgary International Jazz Festival. Shadoplay was #1 on CJSW FM with “Norwegian Rat” in 1985 and #3 with “Tahiti Treat” in 1986, both instrumentals. Performed for the Calgary Olympic Arts Festival in 1987 at the Performing Arts Centre and then in 1988 at the Olympic Arts Festival in the Devonian Gardens.

Then in 1991 they opened up for Skywalk for the Calgary Jazz Festival at Sparky’s. Four dancers called L.A. North, joined the band for 6 shows in 1992 including the Calgary Jazz Festival at Olympic Plaza and MusiCalgary at the Palliser Hotel. In 1993 Shadoplay performed at the Jack Singer Concert Hall for MusiCalgary. Alex recorded in Rio de Janeiro in 1996. In 2002 Alex recorded a Cd with David Haney and Adam Dillar at Jack Straw Studio’s called “Late Notes From Seattle.” It was broadcast live on KEXP FM radio and on the internet. At X-N-Tric Studio’s in Vancouver, Alex and David teamed up with legendary Dutch drummer Han Bennink in 2003 for the Cd “Khanitra.” They performed a concert in 2004 at the Cantos Music Foundation for the Calgary Jazz Society. Mike Lefebvre’s and Alex’s music was showcased for “Dig Your Roots” in 2006. For Reveillon 2010, a Brazilian New Years celebration, Alex performed with Paulo Padilha from Brazil. Then for Reveillon 2011, Alex performed with Eduardo Mendonca from Brazil.
